The origin of Holika Dahan is connected with the legend of Prahlada, son of demon king Hiranyakashipu.
Hiranyakashipu wanted everyone to worship him as God. But his son Prahlada was a great devotee of Vishnu. Enraged by this devotion, the king tried many ways to kill him.
Finally, he took help from his sister Holika, who had a boon that fire could not burn her. She sat in a fire with Prahlada in her lap, intending to kill him. However, due to Prahlada’s faith and divine protection:
- Holika was burned to ashes.
- Prahlada remained safe.

🔔 Rituals of Holika Dahan
- People gather wood and light a bonfire at night.
- Prayers are offered for protection and prosperity.
- Evil thoughts, anger, jealousy are symbolically burned in the fire.
Dhulandi or Rangwali Holi is the day when people apply gulal, celebrate with friends and family, and forget past conflicts.
